Short answer

Growth marketing is a way of growing a business by improving every stage of the customer journey, not just ads: how people find you, try you, come back, refer others and pay. Growth marketers run fast, measured experiments and keep only what moves the numbers. Growth hacking is the older startup name for the same idea.

What does growth marketing mean in simple words?

Growth marketing means owning the whole customer journey. Traditional marketing often stops when someone clicks an ad. Growth marketing keeps going until that person becomes a loyal, paying customer who tells friends.

The term grew out of "growth hacking". Sean Ellis coined that term in 2010 and described a growth hacker as "a person whose true north is growth" (GrowthHackers). Today most teams say growth marketing because it sounds less like a trick and more like a discipline.

Three ideas sit at the core:

  • Full funnel: you work on acquisition, activation, retention, referral and revenue together.
  • Experiments: every change is a test with a clear metric and a deadline.
  • Data: decisions come from tracking, not opinions or taste.

What is the AARRR funnel?

AARRR is a simple model created by investor Dave McClure. People call it "pirate metrics" because the letters sound like a pirate. It splits the customer journey into five stages (Amplitude).

What it meansExample metric
AcquisitionPeople find you and arriveInstalls, site visits, cost per install
ActivationThey get first real valueFirst order, first transaction, account set up
RetentionThey come back againDay 30 retention, repeat purchase rate
ReferralThey bring othersInvites sent, referral signups
RevenueThey pay youAverage order value, lifetime value

The power of AARRR is focus. If activation is weak, more ad spend just buys more people who leave. Fix the weakest stage first.

How does the growth experiment loop work?

Growth teams work in short cycles, usually one or two weeks. Each cycle follows the same loop.

  1. Find the leak. Look at the funnel and pick the stage with the biggest drop.
  2. Write ideas. List possible fixes, for example a shorter signup or a WhatsApp welcome message.
  3. Score and pick. Rank ideas by likely impact, confidence and effort.
  4. Test. Run an A/B test (two versions shown to similar people) with one clear metric.
  5. Learn and scale. Keep winners, kill losers, write down why.

The goal is speed of learning. A team running ten honest tests a month will beat a team running one big campaign a quarter.

Who is on a growth marketing team?

You do not need a big team. You need these skills covered, in house or through an agency:

  • Growth lead: owns the funnel numbers and picks experiments.
  • Performance marketer: runs paid ads on Meta, Google, TikTok and Snapchat.
  • CRM and retention specialist: builds push, email and WhatsApp journeys.
  • Analyst: sets up tracking (GA4, AppsFlyer or Adjust) and reads results.
  • Creative producer: makes many ad and message variations fast.
  • Product or web support: changes onboarding, landing pages and checkout.

In Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the UAE we often see one person doing three of these jobs. That works early on, but tracking and creative volume usually become the bottleneck.

Growth marketing vs traditional marketing

Traditional marketing still matters. Brand campaigns in Ramadan or on National Day build memory that makes every ad cheaper later. Growth marketing makes sure that attention turns into customers who stay.

What results can growth marketing deliver?

For a leading Egyptian fintech app, OneKind ran growth across the full funnel in 2024. The app reached 1 million registered users in 9 months, 3 months ahead of plan.

  • 38% first time activation rate, meaning new users completed a first real action.
  • 30% of users inactive for 6+ months came back and made a transaction.
  • Customer acquisition cost (CAC, what you pay to win one customer) fell about 43% in total while spend scaled.

No single ad did this. It came from 200+ creative tests, cleaner tracking, and retention journeys working together.

How we approach growth marketing at OneKind

  1. Audit tracking first. We check that every funnel stage fires the right event in GA4, AppsFlyer or Adjust.
  2. Map the funnel with real numbers and find the single biggest leak.
  3. Pick one North Star metric, such as weekly active transacting users.
  4. Build a test backlog of 20 to 30 ideas across ads, onboarding and CRM.
  5. Run weekly sprints and share a one page report every Sunday.
  6. Scale winners by market, adapting creative for Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the UAE separately.

Typical setup time before the first experiments go live: 3 to 4 weeks.

FAQ

Is growth marketing the same as growth hacking?

Mostly yes. Growth hacking is the original startup term from 2010. Growth marketing is the more mature version that also covers retention, CRM and brand.

What does a growth marketer do?

A growth marketer finds where customers drop off, runs experiments to fix it, and scales what works. They own numbers like activation, retention and acquisition cost.

What are the 5 stages of growth marketing?

The common model is AARRR: acquisition, activation, retention, referral and revenue. Each stage has its own metric and its own tests.

Is growth marketing only for startups and apps?

No. Ecommerce stores, banks, real estate developers and B2B companies all use it. Any business with a measurable customer journey can apply it.

How long does growth marketing take to show results?

Early test results often show within weeks. Bigger shifts in retention and acquisition cost usually take a few months of steady testing.
