Which marketing KPIs actually matter?

Short answer

The marketing KPIs that matter are the ones tied to revenue and profit: customer acquisition cost, conversion rate, return on ad spend, retention and customer lifetime value. Likes, followers and impressions are useful signals, but they are not goals. Pick a few real KPIs for your business type and review them on one dashboard at a fixed rhythm.

What makes a KPI matter?

A KPI (key performance indicator) is a number that tells you if you are reaching a business goal. Google Analytics calls the actions behind these numbers key events: actions "particularly important to the success of your business" (Google Analytics Help).

A good marketing KPI passes three tests:

  • It links to money: sales, leads that close, or retained customers.
  • It leads to a decision: if it moves, you know what to change.
  • You can measure it reliably, with clean tracking.

Eric Ries, author of The Lean Startup, called the rest vanity metrics: numbers that "might make you feel good, but they don't offer clear guidance for what to do" (Ries, 2009).

What is the difference between vanity metrics and real metrics?

Why it misleadsTrack this instead
FollowersCan grow without any salesLeads or sales from social, cost per result
Impressions and reachShows exposure, not interestCost per 1,000 views plus brand search growth
LikesEasy to inflate with giveawaysSaves, shares, click rate
App installsMany installs never open the appActivated users, cost per active user
Total leadsJunk leads look like successQualified leads, cost per qualified lead
Website trafficBots and low intent visitsConversion rate, revenue per visitor

Vanity metrics are not useless. Reach and views matter for awareness. They become a problem only when they are the goal.

Which KPIs fit your business type?

North Star KPISupporting KPIs
EcommerceMonthly revenue from repeat and new customersConversion rate, average order value, ROAS, cart abandonment, repeat purchase rate
Mobile appWeekly active or transacting usersCost per install, activation rate, Day 1/7/30 retention, cost per active user
Real estate leadsCost per qualified lead or per site visitLead to call rate, call to visit rate, visit to booking rate, cost per booking
B2BPipeline value from marketingCost per qualified lead, lead to meeting rate, win rate, sales cycle length

A North Star metric is the one number most linked to long term success. Mixpanel describes it as a metric that leads to revenue, reflects customer value and measures progress.

Market note: in Egypt, many ecommerce orders are cash on delivery, so track delivered orders, not just placed orders. In Saudi Arabia and the UAE, real estate buyers often take weeks to decide, so track leads by month of entry and follow them to booking.

Which KPIs should you track for each goal?

  • Goal: more sales now. Watch CPA, ROAS and conversion rate.
  • Goal: cheaper growth. Watch blended CAC (total marketing cost divided by all new customers) and CAC payback time.
  • Goal: keep customers. Watch retention rate, churn and lifetime value.
  • Goal: build the brand. Watch reach in target audience, brand search volume and share of voice.

What is ROAS?

What should a simple marketing dashboard show?

One page. No more than 10 numbers. Each number shows this period, last period and target.

  1. Top row: revenue or qualified leads, blended CAC, your North Star KPI.
  2. Second row: funnel rates, from click to visit, visit to lead or cart, lead or cart to sale.
  3. Third row: channel table with spend, results and cost per result for Meta, Google, TikTok, Snapchat.
  4. Fourth row: retention, repeat rate or cohort chart.
  5. Notes box: what changed, what we tested, what we will do next.

Tools: GA4 plus Looker Studio works for most websites. Apps add AppsFlyer or Adjust data. Real estate teams must connect the CRM, or lead quality stays invisible.

How often should you review marketing KPIs?

What to reviewWho
DailySpend, cost per result, broken trackingMedia buyer
WeeklyFunnel rates, test results, creative winnersMarketing team
MonthlyCAC, ROAS, retention cohorts, budget splitMarketing lead and founder
QuarterlyLifetime value, CAC payback, channel mix, targetsLeadership

Plan reviews around seasons. Costs and conversion rates in Ramadan, Eid and White Friday are not normal months, so compare them to the same season last year.

How we set KPIs at OneKind

  1. Start from the business goal and the unit economics: margin, average order or deal value.
  2. Pick one North Star and five to eight supporting KPIs.
  3. Audit tracking until every KPI is trusted.
  4. Set targets from your own history, then from market benchmarks: in Egypt, leads cost about EGP 180 to 450 in real estate and EGP 65 to 180 in education, and an ecommerce sale about EGP 35 to 95. In Saudi Arabia, real estate leads cost about SAR 200 to 600 (23HubLab, 2026).
  5. Build the dashboard and agree the review rhythm with your team.
  6. Drop any KPI nobody has acted on for three months.

For a leading Egyptian fintech app, we judged success on activation and acquisition cost, not installs. That focus helped deliver a 38% first time activation rate.

FAQ

What are the most important marketing KPIs?

For most businesses: customer acquisition cost, conversion rate, ROAS, retention rate and customer lifetime value. Pick the ones tied to your main goal.

What is the difference between a KPI and a metric?

Every KPI is a metric, but not every metric is a KPI. A KPI is a metric you chose because it tracks a key business goal.

How many KPIs should a marketing team track?

One North Star plus five to eight supporting KPIs is enough for most teams. More than that usually means nobody acts on them.

Are social media followers a good KPI?

Usually not on their own. Followers are a vanity metric unless you link them to leads, sales or retention.

What KPIs should a real estate developer track?

Cost per qualified lead, lead to site visit rate, visit to booking rate and cost per booking. Connect your CRM so lead quality is visible.
