What makes a TikTok or Reels ad perform?

Short answer

A TikTok or Reels ad performs when it follows five TikTok ads tips: a hook in the first 2 to 3 seconds, a native look, sound plus captions, text inside the safe zone and one clear call to action. TikTok's own guidance says to introduce your main message in the first 3 seconds and shoot vertical 9:16 with sound.

How do you hook people in the first 2 to 3 seconds?

The hook is the opening moment that stops the scroll. If it fails, nothing else in the ad matters.

  • TikTok advises introducing your main message in the first 3 seconds for better recall, and putting your hook in the first 6 seconds to raise watch time (TikTok Business Help Center).
  • TikTok's Creative Center research found the first 2 seconds are the most valuable for ad recall.
  • Meta's Reels Ads Guide (2025) also asks for immediate hooks and one focused idea per Reel.

Hooks that work in our region

  • A question: "Still paying full price for your bus ticket?"
  • A bold result shown, not told: the finished product in the first frame.
  • A relatable problem in local dialect.
  • Movement or a surprise in frame one.

How do you make an ad look native, not like a TV ad?

Native means the ad looks like the content people already watch on the app. TikTok's creative guide says ads should feel native, short, vertical and authentic.

  • Shoot vertical 9:16, at least 720p (TikTok Business Help Center).
  • Use real people talking to camera. TikTok found that creator ads drove a 70% higher click through rate than non creator ads at the same CPM (TikTok internal analysis, 2024 to 2025).
  • Show human emotion. TikTok's Creative Center found talent showing 4 or more emotions linked to a 3.3x conversion lift.
  • Use trends only when they fit the brand. A forced trend looks worse than no trend.

Design for sound on, but caption for sound off

TikTok is a sound on platform. TikTok's Creative Center reports that 93% of TikTok users keep sound on.

On Meta, ads with both music and voiceover drew a 15% higher average positive response than ads without sound (Meta, reported by eMarketer, 2023).

Still, some people watch muted. So add captions too.

  • TikTok recommends 5 to 10 words per second when you use on screen text.
  • TikTok's Creative Center found captions linked to a 58% recall uplift.
  • For Arabic, check the captions read right to left and are not cut by the app's interface.

What is the safe zone, and what must stay inside it?

The safe zone is the area of the screen not covered by the app's buttons, caption and profile name. Text or logos outside it get hidden.

  • TikTok provides downloadable safe zone files, including Arabic right to left (RTL) versions, and the zone changes with your caption length (TikTok video ad specifications).
  • Meta's Reels guide asks advertisers to keep captions and CTA buttons inside the safe zone and offers a safe zone guardrail in Ads Manager.
  • Rule of thumb: keep faces, text and logos in the centre. Avoid the bottom area and the right side where buttons sit.

How long should a TikTok or Reels ad be?

TikTok's creative guide says to deliver value within 10 to 20 seconds. Non Spark in feed ads can run up to 10 minutes, but that does not mean they should.

LengthBest for
Short6 to 15 secondsOne offer, one message, retargeting
Medium15 to 30 secondsProblem and solution, product demo, UGC testimonial
Long30 to 60 secondsExplainers, app walkthroughs, storytelling series

These ranges are our working guide. Test two lengths of the same idea and let results decide.

End with one clear call to action (plus a launch checklist)

A call to action (CTA) tells people exactly what to do next: book, download, order.

  • Say it and show it on screen.
  • Use one action only.
  • TikTok's Creative Center found CTAs placed in the opening frame linked to a 44% conversion lift versus later placement. Try an early CTA as a test version.
  • Match the CTA to the landing page or app store page.
  • Hook in the first 2 to 3 seconds
  • Main message in the first 3 seconds
  • Vertical 9:16, at least 720p
  • Sound or voiceover included, music licensed for ads
  • Captions at 5 to 10 words per second
  • Text, logo and faces inside the safe zone (check Arabic RTL)
  • One clear CTA
  • 3 to 5 creative versions per ad group, as TikTok suggests

How we build TikTok and Reels ads at OneKind

  1. Find the audience's real question or doubt.
  2. Write three hooks for every script.
  3. Shoot vertical with real people and local dialect.
  4. Edit several lengths and CTAs from the same footage.
  5. Launch versions together, cut losers fast, scale winners.

For Blue Bus, an Egyptian intercity bus operator, we built destination content per governorate on TikTok, selling the journey, not the bus. One TikTok video reached 4.9 million views, and the brand passed 108K TikTok followers within 12 months.

FAQ

How long should a TikTok ad be?

TikTok advises delivering value within 10 to 20 seconds. We usually test a short version under 15 seconds against a 20 to 30 second version.

What size should a TikTok or Reels ad be?

Vertical 9:16. TikTok asks for at least 720p, and both platforms recommend keeping key content inside the safe zone.

Do TikTok ads need sound?

Yes. TikTok reports 93% of its users keep sound on, so use music or voiceover, and add captions for people watching muted.

Can I use the same ad on TikTok and Instagram Reels?

Often yes, but check that safe zones differ, remove watermarks from the other app, and test platform specific hooks.

What is the most important part of a TikTok ad?

The first 2 to 3 seconds. TikTok's research shows the opening seconds matter most for recall, and a weak hook means people never see the rest.
