What is AppsFlyer, and does your app need it?

Short answer

AppsFlyer is a mobile measurement partner (MMP): a tool that shows which ad, channel or campaign brought each app install, and what that user did next. Your app needs AppsFlyer, or a similar MMP, once you pay for installs on more than one channel. A small app with little paid spend can start on the free tier or wait.

What does AppsFlyer actually do?

AppsFlyer calls an MMP "a trusted and impartial referee to rule on attribution". Attribution means giving credit for an install or purchase to the ad or channel that caused it.

You add a small piece of code (an SDK, a software kit inside your app) to your iOS and Android apps. From then on, AppsFlyer matches ad clicks and views with installs and with what people do inside the app.

What it tracks

  • Installs by source: which network, campaign, ad set and creative brought each user.
  • In app events: registration, first deposit, first order, subscription, or any step you define.
  • Revenue and return on ad spend per channel.
  • Retention cohorts: how many users from each source come back on day 1, day 7 and day 30.
  • Reengagement: users who come back from a retargeting ad.
  • Deep links (OneLink): links that open a set screen inside the app, even after a fresh install.
  • Fraud: fake installs from bots or install farms, through its Protect360 product.
  • iOS privacy data: Apple's SKAdNetwork reports, needed since iOS 14.

Why not just trust the numbers inside Meta, TikTok or Google?

Each ad platform reports its own results and tends to claim credit. One user can see a TikTok ad, then click a Meta ad, then install. Both platforms may count that install.

An MMP removes the double count and gives each install to one source using the same rules for all. That is how you see the true cost per user from each channel, and move budget with confidence.

It also sends the right events back to the ad platforms. This lets Meta or Google optimize for people who register or pay, not only people who install.

How much does AppsFlyer cost?

AppsFlyer publishes its plans on its pricing page. Prices change, so confirm on the page before you sign. As of our research in October 2026:

Who it fitsWhat you pay
ZeroApps using owned media only (website, SMS, social posts)Free. Welcome Package with 12K free conversions for the first year
GrowthStartups starting paid campaignsSame Welcome Package, then $0.07 per conversion (pay as you go)
EnterpriseBrands scaling paid media, needing fraud tools and deeper analyticsCustom price. You contact sales for a quote

A conversion here is mainly a paid (non organic) install. AppsFlyer's billing help page says organic installs and fraud are not billed.

Simple example: after the free allowance, 20,000 paid installs in a month would cost about $1,400 on the Growth plan (20,000 × $0.07). Enterprise prices depend on your volume and add ons, so there is no public number.

When does a small app not need AppsFlyer yet?

You can wait, or stay on the free tier, if most of these are true:

  • Your app is not live yet, or you are still fixing the core product.
  • You run ads on one channel only, so there is nothing to compare.
  • Your paid installs are a few hundred a month, and you still fix onboarding every week.
  • You have not yet defined the events that matter, like registration or first payment.

In that stage, the App Store Connect and Google Play Console dashboards plus a free analytics tool are enough. Plan the MMP setup before your first serious paid push, not after it. Fixing tracking mid campaign wastes weeks of data.

Setup checklist: getting AppsFlyer right

  1. Write down your event map: 5 to 10 events, from install to first payment, with the same names on iOS and Android.
  2. Have your developers add the SDK to both apps and send those events, with revenue where relevant.
  3. Connect every ad partner you use: Meta, Google, TikTok, Snapchat, Apple Ads and any ad networks.
  4. Set up SKAdNetwork conversion values so iOS campaigns report the events that matter.
  5. Create OneLink links for ads, SMS, QR codes and influencers, so each user lands on the right screen.
  6. Turn on fraud protection before you buy from ad networks or affiliates.
  7. Test on real devices: install from a test link and check every event appears.
  8. Compare MMP numbers with your own backend for two weeks. Gaps above 10% to 15% mean something is broken.
  9. Build one weekly dashboard: spend, installs, registrations, first payments and cost per paying user by channel.

Does the market change the setup?

Yes, mostly because of the iPhone share. StatCounter shows iOS at about 52% of mobile use in Saudi Arabia, 22% in the UAE and 12% in Egypt (August 2026).

In Saudi Arabia, iOS privacy rules affect half your traffic, so SKAdNetwork setup matters a lot. In Egypt, Android dominates, so Android tracking and fraud checks on Android traffic come first.

How we approach it at OneKind

We treat tracking as step one of every app growth project, before we scale any budget.

  1. We agree with the founder on one north star event, such as first transaction or first order.
  2. We audit the existing MMP setup, event names and partner connections.
  3. We fix gaps with the developers, then test on devices in each market.
  4. Only then do we scale spend, and we report cost per paying user, not cost per install.

The tool matters less than the setup. For a leading Egyptian fintech app, we moved tracking from AppsFlyer to Adjust because the team needed reliable tracking before scaling. The app then reached 1 million registered users in 9 months.

FAQ

Is AppsFlyer free?

Partly. The Zero and Growth plans include a Welcome Package of 12K free conversions for the first year. After that, Growth costs $0.07 per conversion, and Enterprise is custom priced.

What is an MMP?

A mobile measurement partner is a neutral tool that gives credit for each app install and in app action to the ad or channel that caused it. AppsFlyer, Adjust, Branch and Singular are common examples.

Does AppsFlyer count organic installs?

Yes, it reports them so you can see your full picture. According to AppsFlyer's billing help page, organic installs are not billed.

Can I use AppsFlyer with Snapchat and TikTok ads?

Yes. AppsFlyer connects with thousands of ad networks, including Meta, Google, TikTok and Snapchat, so you compare them on the same rules.

Who sets up AppsFlyer, the agency or the developers?

Both. Developers add the SDK and events in the app code. The marketing team or agency defines the events, connects ad partners and checks the data.
